A different kind of business funding
The UK Start Up Loans programme offers personal loans for business use. It is different from a loan made only to a limited company. Your personal affordability and credit history form part of the assessment.
The programme also includes support with planning and mentoring. Funding is subject to eligibility and approval, and it is not a grant.
Current programme details
For new applications from 6 April 2026, the fixed annual interest rate is 7.5% and eligible businesses can have been trading for up to 60 months. The programme offers loans from £500 to £25,000 per person, repayable over one to five years, subject to assessment.
These details were checked on 30 September 2026. Always confirm the latest terms with Start Up Loans before applying.
Prepare the business case and your personal budget
Expect to work through a business plan, cash flow forecast and personal survival budget. Consider both the expected trading income and what would happen if the business grows more slowly than planned.
Because the borrowing is personal, a business setback does not remove your repayment obligation.
You can apply directly
You do not need to pay anyone to apply. Visit the official Start Up Loans website to check eligibility, understand the application process and access the programme’s support.
Other routes may include savings, grants, equity investment or starting at a smaller scale. Each has different obligations and availability.
A few common questions

Can I apply directly?
Yes. Use the official Start Up Loans website to check current eligibility and apply. Business Loan Advice does not assess applications or make lending decisions.
